This is VERY similar to the pattern of lines in Ladytron’s video for “Runaway”

While I’m not saying anyone stole from anyone else, I’m just point out similarties between similar acts. Interesting postulations? I’d like to think so.

“Never in a million years would I have ever loved The Knife,” (oh, and that Fever Ray outfit) is what I thought of whenever I heard this, but luckily I acquired the taste.

I am so glad I did. Because when you acquire the taste, you get to enjoy some of the best music the Indie world has to offer. The song below is from, about, and for opera. Without further ado, let me introduce you to the 11 minute opera-epic which is “Colouring of Pigeons”.

This is The Knife’s first release since Karin Dreijer Andersson went on to become Fever Ray. With one celebrated self titled freshmen release, as well as a celebrated tour/live show. under her belt, she returns to The Knife with her brother, Olof Dreijer, with amazing results. “Colouring of Pigeons” is from their next album (official release THIS March!!), a unique musical project, which was made in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, for the performance group Hotel Pro Forma, for their “Darwin electro-opera”. Description and tracklisting below. I cannot wait until March!

The world seen through the eyes of Charles Darwin forms the basis for the performance Tomorrow, in a year. Theatre production company Hotel Pro Forma’s striking visuals blend with pop-duo The Knife’s ground-breaking music to create a new species of electro-opera.

An opera singer, a pop singer and an actor perform The Knife’s music and represent Darwin, time and nature on stage. Six dancers form the raw material of life. Together with the newest technology in light and sound, our image of the world as a place of incredible variation, similarity and unity is re-discovered.

Welp kids, my computer is shot. Literally. The capacitors on my graphics card have been blowing up over the past couple months and I just got the new one in for Christmas, which I won’t be opening for another 2 days. So I’ve been operating off my mother’s netbook. On the upshot, when I do get my graphics card installed, I will also be installing Windows 7, getting a new keyboard AND mouse, and all of my music will be more organized. Since I can’t download any new music to my mother’s netbook, it’s kind of hard to post mp3s for your listening pleasure. So there. My excuse: I haven’t posted anything in a while because my computer is the D in DoA.

Heaven Can Wait, the single, features vocals by Beck, and is from Gainsbourg’s “highly anticipated album” “IRM”, which is produced by, you guessed it, Beck. It is currently scheduled for released n January 26th.

Here I am in Starbucks. This is the first day I’ve felt like writing, and the atmosphere is optimal.  Coffee smells, sudo-vintage hipswag jazz, and a clear view of the busy streets. My favourite past time is probably listening to techno music while watching cars go by. I hate to end sentences with prepositions about as much as I hate cliffhangers; probably because they are the same thing. I like to sway my feet with this mixtape, but when I hear that I am actually swaying my feet with the music in Starbucks, I have to change, so it looks like I am listening to something that has no consistency what so ever, which wouldn’t be odd for me. Maybe if they played Norah Jones’s Christmas stuff I would take my iPod out, but apparently Norah Jones is too mainstream for this joint; as if Starbucks isn’t?

Things are changing for me. Good changes. Now nothing changes very fast (for very long, anyways) of course. I’ve found myself to be much more comfortable in public and around people while alone.

UNRELATED: A hideous purple Chevy Equinox just drove by with about 200 people in it, approximately.

Back…At any rate, I am much less socially inept than I used to be. I think, and hope, one day soon my social anxiety will be more than a “-1″ and less than a “1″  on the scale of annoyance and inhibition, as observed by me in the study of my human interaction.

Onto the real reason why we’re all here…a little bit of history of Starbucks in this lowly, and globally irrelevant town of Northern Georgia. This place used to be a second Arby’s. This is a big deal, because the only thing we have more than 1 of around here are gas stations and pawn shops.

INTERMISSION

This lady sitting on the couch in front of me is singing the old-new-vintage jazz hipswag music while reading. IMPOSSIBLE! What is she reading? IDK, my friends. But it is one of those novels which have the author’s name in gigantic font, with the title of the book somewhere obscure and probably spelled backwards; like under the publisher’s name in fine print inside the novel. The author is Pat Connory. I wonder if Pat’s a guy or girl…

AND WE’RE BACK

The 2nd Arby’s decided it would be an excellent business decision to move down an exit from the other one. So then we had this here abandoned and overgrown Arby’s. (Rumour has it, kudzu managed to overtake the kitchen within a month of them moving out; a record not yet matched in the entire county). The land was on the market for years.

INTERMISSION

This “bznz” man (suit, tie, with tiny company laptop) got up to go the bathroom FOREVER ago. I wonder if he took a “bznz” trip to Aruba and wrote a novel (HE COULD BE PAT CONNORY. Though I doubt even he knows the name of his own novel…Do authors wear suits as casual wear? Food for thought) as no human takes that long, unless…

AND WE’RE BACK

After a while of sitting there, the old Arby’s was torn down and turned into a plot filled with none other than: dirt. Finally the land decided to take it upon itself to no longer be “that ugly patch of dirt” and grew some nice grass. Then, awarded for it’s hard work, it won the Academy Award of commercial real estate: a “SOLD” sign. Apparently some mysterious coffee god forked over the big ones to build a Starbucks. Right around the same time, Kroger (right down the street) decided it was time to bring a Starbucks to this one-horse town. A bad decision, really…The Kroger Starbucks was largely a failure; a flop; a menagerie of screw ups. Aside from a year-long service record of messed up orders and poor waiting times (I clocked them fastest at 3 minutes for a simple tall cafe vanilla latte), when the full-Monty Starbucks opened up on what it came to be known as”Ye Olde Arby’s Lot”, the non-grocery shopping, coffee drinking consumer base largely shifted to this real coffee house. With tables and cheap pre-fab hipswag jazz that is so gender neutral you start to question sexuality in general! This brings us to the Starbucks of today: one that, instead of drawing a massive west coast profit, has shifted to the east in terms of cups of coffee sold per capita. While I am not complaining about having an actual coffee shop in this hole-in-the-wall of a town, I wish that trends would start on the east coast some day (WE HAVE NEW YORK CITY, FFS!)

Oh, and the Gingerbread Latte? Do not get it.

Tuesday’s inbox always brings me such lovely things.

Vitalic is just cool. Not much else about it. His 4th release, FLASHMOB, is a stunning blend of synth and percussion; and in no other song on the album is this more evident that SEE THE SEA.

The video recreates the 19th century of one Etienne-Jules Marey on fluid dynamics, and was made around the cover’s picture of FLASHMOB. Directed by //DIY & Brilliantine.

The first in many posts of “my favourites” of this year of fantastic music, including music videos, live performances, EPs, and full releases.

Fever Ray’s mysticism is always appreciated around these parts (of the Internets), add in Tiga’s penchant for club beats and, oddly enough, sirens and you have a potent mixture.

This is currently the song with the most plays on my iTunes (the one below it is separated by a margin of about 60 plays).

Despite being the best song on Fever Ray’s self-titled, freshman release, Tiga made it even better (something I thought impossible). Tiga managed to add in the club, while keeping Fever Ray’s original and famous, spooky mood.

My fiery relationship with Fear of Tigers and his music – which I can only describe as an audible religious experience – began with 1 song I found while flipping through RSS Tunes:

Sounding completely 80′s disco to me, I instantly fell in love. Now, for the album review…

I Can Make Your Pain Disappear - 6/10; O.K. vocals, strong club tune.

What Did I Do? – 7/10; 4 words: Eighty’s teen breakup jam. And 5 more: a damn good one, too.

The Adventures of Pippi Longstrump – 9/10; My current favourite, very solid percussion.

Cossus Snufsigalonica – 7/10; GET PUMPED. Killer work-out beats. Heavy rotation.

Don’t Leave – 5/10; High note: the rifts after the chorus; average club tune.

Ha Waw – 8/10; Quite possibly the next chant at major sporting events. “HAAAWAAAAAWWWWWW” Funky!

Study Hard Drugs School – 9/10; 2nd favourite. This is where Fear of Tigers is skilled. If any other producer / artist would have tried the things he did in this song, it would have sounded cheesy, unpolished, or lame as hell. And this song is none of those things, because Fear of Tigers knows what he’s doing.

The Rich Cry Too – 7/10; Same thing as Study Hard Drugs School, basically. Each individual part of this song would sound terribad, but the combination sounds amazing.
Sirkka – 10/10; Probably the best club tune on the entire album. Quirky, yet serious. Just enough synth to make you want more. This is going to be my favourite after a couple more listens.

Calling Your Name -9/10; Stunning intro. From the thunderstorm + rain sounds, to the synth, and the dramatic vocals – this song ends the album on a solemn note.

FINAL SCORE: 7.7  = 8

8: Strong album. Well put together and musically relevant in today’s industry. Heavy rotation.
